Enlarging a scanned book on a phone often means moving left and right after every few words. An EPUB can solve that reading problem when the page images become real text that wraps to the screen. Simply putting the same page pictures inside a different file does not.
To convert a scanned PDF to EPUB, you need recognition and document structure as well as a format change. The result should be judged in the reader you intend to use, with the original PDF available for comparison.
OCR does a different job from changing formats
A scanned PDF stores pictures of pages. OCR recovers the words in those pictures. Document processing then needs to put paragraphs, headings, illustrations, and notes into a useful reading sequence.
A PDF may also have an existing text layer. Try copying a paragraph into a plain-text editor. If it arrives garbled or in the wrong order, selectable text alone does not prove that the file is ready. Some books mix searchable pages with image-only inserts, so check more than the introduction.
Renaming .pdf to .epub does not convert the contents. A conversion that preserves full-page images may preserve appearance, but it will not provide the adjustable text you wanted. Look for actual selectable text and reflow in the result.
Decide where reflow will help—and where to keep the PDF
In a reflowable EPUB, the reader arranges text around the available screen and font settings. A larger font creates more screen pages without making you pan across each printed line. The W3C EPUB specification also includes fixed-layout publications; the extension alone does not promise reflow.
Novels and prose-heavy books are natural candidates. A table-heavy textbook or illustrated manual may still benefit, but retain the PDF for wide tables, spatial diagrams, and original page references. A reflowed chapter does not have the same pagination as its printed source.
If editing and collecting extracts matter more than continuous reading, use PDF to Markdown instead. Neither output replaces the source when you need to verify an exact quotation or measurement.
Prepare a source worth recognizing
Inspect an ordinary page, a chapter opening, and the hardest page in the book. Check for cut-off margins, missing pages, crooked lines, faint type, and words disappearing into the binding gutter. Use a clearer source when available; enlarging a blurred image does not restore letters that were never captured.
If you scan the book yourself, review a few pages before finishing the whole volume. Make sure both edges are present and text remains legible near the spine. Keep pages in their intended order and retain the original scan before making cleanup changes.
A short representative PDF can help you assess a workflow before processing a large collection. Prepare that sample outside PDF Craft if needed; do not assume an automatic sample-generation or preview feature.
Upload, choose EPUB, and download
Open Scanned PDF to EPUB and upload your PDF. Choose EPUB as the output format in the task settings. If you want the original language, leave translation off; enable it and choose a target language only when you also want translation.
Review the current task limits and Pricing, submit, and download the completed EPUB from the task. You can open it in your usual EPUB reader. PDF Craft Desktop is an additional option for reading and organizing the source and result, not a requirement for online conversion.
Keep the download in a clearly named folder alongside the PDF. If you retry processing, distinguish the results rather than overwriting the version you already checked.
Check chapters, notes, and difficult transitions
Start with structure. Compare the table of contents with the source, jump to several chapters, and confirm the book's beginning and ending are present. A clickable chapter entry should take you to the right place, not merely any heading with a similar name.
Then test reading comfort: enlarge the font and narrow the reader window. Paragraphs should wrap without constant horizontal scrolling. Inspect images and captions together, and check a long table on the actual device.
Read across a printed page break and, if present, a column transition. Watch for running headers inserted into sentences, joined paragraphs, missing punctuation, and words broken by print hyphenation. Follow a footnote marker to its complete note; inspect notes that continue across pages.
Finally, compare names, dates, quantities, and a passage important to the argument. Sampling helps find common problems, but it does not certify every page. If a repeated error appears, broaden your review to similar pages. Use the formula and footnote checklist for technical books, and keep the source available while you read the converted edition.
